How to Get Rid of Gasoline Smell

How to Get Rid of Gasoline Smell

The gasoline scent is one of the most intense and one that’s hard to get rid of. Even a drop of gasoline can stink up your car, clothes, the floor, or whatever other surfaces it gets on, and may linger in the air for hours, sometimes days on end.

Getting rid of the gasoline scent is not only challenging but also needs a lot of caution. This is because gasoline is highly flammable and the wrong move can set everything ablaze. Instead of using an air freshener or fabric deodorizer to mask the smell from your clothes or room, you can take the following steps to get rid of the smell completely.

Tools and Materials

These are the tools you will need to remove the smell:

How to Get Rid of Gasoline Smell

On the Garage Floor

If you spill some gasoline on a floor or a fuel tank leaks, the puddle can become a permanent smell. The good news is you can easily lift the smell and liquid using cat litter. The same way the clay granules in the litter effectively clean up after a cat, they can also absorb liquid quickly and fight the odor from a gasoline spill.

Make sure you get in there fast. Don’t wait until the gas evaporates before cleaning up.

Follow these steps while the gasoline is still in liquid form:

  • Generously spread some odor-absorbing litter over the puddle.
  • Let it soak up the spill for one to two hours.
  • With a broom, sweep the gasoline-soaked remains, collect them in a dustpan, and transfer them to a sealed plastic bag or container to seal in the smell.
  • Dispose of the cat litter responsibly. Check your local laws and your city’s disposal rules to know how to correctly dispose of the container with contaminated litter.
  • Leave the garage door open to air out the lingering smell.

In the Car

This cleaning method works best if you spill gasoline on the car’s upholstery. The interior can soak up the spill and leave the upholstery reeking of gasoline, stinking up the whole car. To deal with this smell, we will use a combination of vinegar, baking soda, and hot water.

First, mix a solution of equal parts vinegar, baking soda, and hot water. You should then dip a cloth or rag in the solution and rub it over the area where the gas spilled, whether on the cushion or floor mat.

Rubbing the solution on the area will create friction, which will eliminate any gasoline stains and odor efficiently, thanks to the stain-lifting properties of vinegar and baking soda. Spray a little Febreeze to freshen it up and get rid of any lingering smells.

On Clothing

Because gasoline is highly flammable, immediately discard any clothing or shoes heavily soaked with it. However, if your clothing/shoes only have a little stain or a few drops on them, you can still salvage them. You will, however, need to do more than just washing them.

Airdry the stained clothing for a full day outside for 24 hours. If the smell is too strong, try soaking them in vinegar for about an hour, then leave them to dry in the clothesline. Do not put any gasoline-soaked clothing or shoes into a washer before the smell dissipates, as this could raise the risk of combustion.

Once the smell is gone, vacuum and rub mild dish soap on the stain.

Put the garments into the washer. Load them by themselves to avoid transferring the smell on other clothing. Use the hottest setting for washing if the fabric can handle it.

Once the cycle is over, hang the clothes to dry, or air them preferably outside.

On Your Hand

Use a pack of wipes, as Briggs & Stratton Gas Off wipes, that can get rid of the smell. Such wipes can effectively do away with diesel, gasoline odor and residue, and are safe to use on skin, car upholstery, and plastic.

In conclusion, always make sure you dispose of any item entirely or heavily soaked with gasoline or diesel to reduce the chances of combustion and avoid any accidents. Also,  after cleaning, leave the area open to let fresh air refresh the surfaces and air them properly.

Gasoline’s smell is not easy to get rid of, but by following the above-recommended procedures correctly and as soon as possible, you can beat it.
